Visions in Putty #4 - Spring/Summer 2002
The theme of this VIP was Self-Portrait. This was decided after polls and discussion on the 1listSculpting group. There are many ways to interpret this topic, some ideas are detailed below:
- a real self portrait that is to resemble you. Either in real life form or yourself in for instance a role playing figure.
- a symbolic reference. For example, if you feel you are a devil at sculpting: make a sculpting devil.
- a more abstract reference. For instance a role playing character that for a very special reason means something special to you.
- a caricature with an emphasis on your face.
The main challenge in this subject is the design matter. It's a creativity challenge (it's not only sculpting skills that are important with sculpting) to come up with a figure that represents you in a recognisable way. It's also a way to get to know each other better as with each of the figures we will tell a bit about ourselves.
As to the technical challenge, this depends a bit on the form you choose. The caricature is probably the most difficult of the group in both design and technique. A real self portrait is more a technical challenge than a design challenge.
These miniatures are not commercially available. Later some of these miniatures may become available in some way, but that is depending on the sculptor. For now, only every sculptor got a copy of every entry. The molds made for this are only made for this purpose and will not be available after this event.
Thanks to Jeff R. and Jeff V. for handling and casting the miniatures, Jason Moses for the shipping and Ming-Hua Kao for the initial FAQ.
