This figure was difficult for me to get started on. I could not decide whether to do her as a strictly fantasy figure or some form of modern hero type. Ultimately, I chose to make her a “superhero” type of figure, and the color choices were made with that in mind; brighter and more highly contrasted than is normal for me.

Her flesh was based in Howard Hues Flesh, shadowed with Reaper Caucasian mixed with Vallejo Brown Rose, then highlighted with HH Flesh, Reaper Caucasian and Reaper Fair Maiden. Lips and cheek highlights were added with a mix of Reaper Caucasian and Vallejo Brown Rose thinned to a wash.

Her hair was based in Cel-Vinyl Sun Flesh, shadowed with Cel-Vinyl Red Brown, then highlighted with Sun Flesh and Cel-Vinyl Flesh, followed by a very thin ( 5:1) wash of Reaper Copper Metallic, lightly brushed across the highlights.

The coat was done in Cel-Vinyl Blue-Green, shaded with Cel-Vinyl Greyed Blue-Green, highlighted with increasing additions of Reaper Bloodstone.

The tabard was done in Cel-Vinyl Magenta, shaded with Cel-Vinyl Violet, and highlighted with CV Magenta mixed with Reaper Oiled Leather.

The Blue and Red were both Cel-Vinyl base colors, with greyed shadows.

She was based offset on a Reaper Hexagonal base, which was then filled with Kneadatite to disguise the original figure base and provide a base for the scenic treatment.

The basing material is primarily Scenic Express Alpine Meadow Static Flock, with some Woodland Scenics grass and some local river sand for visual variety.

The contrasts look very good, very striking. I would love to have
a closer look at this one, though. Any chance?

Love the super firey reds for her hair. Bright it may be but
really does look the business. Very grr!

Nice shading on the robe and tabard. That turqoise is yummy.
Pardon my ignorance but what colour is Reaper Bloodstone? My
brain shouted "red!" but it clearly can't be.

Interesting that you kept the dragon skull on the staff in the
same wood tone as the staff itself. Were you going for a 'carved'
effect or didn't spot it until too late (which I nearly did)?

Hi Deane,

Great hair, great baseing. Bigger pics please.

Hi Deane,

I am sure you usually keep the contrast down on your more
conventional models. Maybe that is why you didn't do more
darklining. That is, however, one thing you could do to define
the colors more and add more depth to the mini. I love the
intensity of the paints and I love the base.

I like the back shot much better than the front. It is very
difficult to make out any sort of detail on the front -- like
definition between red and blue on the bodice... but from the
back, I can tell the blue-green is done very well (and is a very
cool color also). I think the runes could be done in a
contrasting color to help bring them out. Really like the natural-looking base.

Deane, Deane, Deane: I expected better shots from a professional
(grin). This has to be one of the most colorful VICs so far.
The hair is great. However, it's sort of hard to see any of the
skin that you describe in so much detail in your commentary. I
like some of your color combinations (the teal and the
cranberry), but don't like others (the blue and the teal). I'm
sort of perplexed as to why you made her jacket and cuffs teal,
but the sleeves of her jacket blue (?), but then individual
interpretation of the VIC figure IS the idea of the VIC. The
boots, that being the only instance of black in this figure, look
somewhat overwhelming.

I really like that Bloodstone. As you noticed, I also used it .
Couldn't wait to use it after I got it from you at Cold Wars. I also like the back better then the front. Red hair always does
go well with blue. Thanks for encouraging me to enter the Vic. Dick

Well I'm finally getting around to this! Your Vicky looks like
one POed redhead! Cool colors, but the pics are too fuzzy. :-( And, yes, I am glad you made me promise to paint her.
Thank you!

Ok, so I know you don't like darklining, but she'd really benefit
from some more extreme shading, especially at the boundaries
between the colours. Like other people I like the back heaps
better than the front. The colours there seem to work nicely. I'm
not so sure on the blue/pink/purple/orange/green/black thing.
Maybe just too many colours. I think that if you got rid of the
blue, pink and black and instead repeated some of your other
colours the effect would be more pleasing. Take my opinion with a
grain of salt though, as I'm not one for bright colours! :o) The
shades and highlights that I can see in the photos (the back of
the coat and the skirt) look really good. The long grass...maybe
trim it down a little, I think it looks a bit odd all on its own.
Last thing, she'd benefit enormously from having some pupils!
Maybe my main problem is that I'm just not a big superhero fan!

Deane,

Like everyone else, I'd like to see more/bigger pictures. I like
the hair alot, fiery red heads and magic seem to go together ;)
I like the color combos you picked for the cloak, they work well
together! I like the base as well! The only glaring thing I can
spot is you missed some details on the boots.
