First, the only converting on this guy is some plastic sheet for proper spacing of the chain gun and the removal of the three grenade launchers on his right side. I wanted that room for insignia. Otherwise, it's straight from the box.
I primed in armory gray so that my reds wouldn't be too bright or dark. This might have been a problem with white or black primer. Then I base coated with a mix of Liquitex Cadmium Deep Red Hue and FW Brand Scarlet ink. The "radar" dish, acid gun mantlet, and hip joint coverings are an olive drab made by mixing Mars Black and Cadmium Yellow Light. The metallic areas were based in Mars Black and dry brushed in a mix of Mars Black and Iridescent Silver.
I was looking for a sort of Martian camouflage effect so I decided on red and black in a variation of the old wermacht three color dappled pattern. A standard pattern of black areas over the red was spiced up with black spots on red and red spots on black. The red spots were a pain since I had to put gray spots over the black first.
The weathering consisted of a Mars Black wash with a bit of Cadmium Red Deep Hue thrown in. Then it was dry brushed with a pinkish-khaki mix of Burnt Sienna, Mars Black, Titanium White and Cadmium Yellow Light. For the matte finish, I used thinned white glue in a layer only a little wetter than a dry brush.
For the base, I wanted a sort of rocky Martian plain look so I used a layer of coarse dust over thinned white glue. This was painted with a mix of Cadmium Red Deep Hue and Burnt Sienna. Then it was dry brushed with the same mix lightened with a little Titanium White.
